Frequently Asked Questions
How does wildlife identification work?
WildPins uses two AI systems. For photos, our vision model identifies species and returns the scientific name plus a confidence score. For audio, we use Cornell Lab’s BirdNET model — the same one used by researchers — to match recordings against thousands of bird and animal calls.
Is WildPins free?
Yes. Core identification, mapping, and sharing are completely free. We offer an optional ad-free Premium upgrade (one-time purchase) to remove banner ads. There are no subscriptions and no paywalls on core features.
Do I need to create an account?
No — you can start in Guest mode immediately. Sign up if you want to save your finds across devices, follow other naturalists, or use group features.
How do you handle my location data?
Location is only used when you actively pin a find. We never track you in the background. You can also delete any pin at any time. See our Privacy Policy for details.
How do I delete my account or my data?
Open the app → Settings → Delete Account, or visit wildpins.app/delete-account to submit a deletion request. Your account and all associated finds are permanently removed within 30 days.
I see inappropriate content — how do I report it?
Tap the three dots (or the small flag icon) on any user’s profile, find, or message. Choose a reason and submit. Our moderation team reviews every report. You can also tap “Block” to never see that user again.
The app crashes or behaves strangely
Email admin@wildpins.app with your device model, OS version, and what you were doing when it happened. Screenshots help! We collect crash reports via Firebase Crashlytics (anonymized) — see our Privacy Policy.
Can I use WildPins offline?
Limited offline support: you can record audio and take photos while offline, and they’ll sync when you reconnect. Map tiles and identification require an internet connection.
Identification was wrong — what should I do?
AI is great but not perfect. You can edit any pin’s name, description, or category from the pin detail screen. We’re always improving the models with feedback — email us your corrections.
